Belmont Wetlands Campground - Redhead Beach

The Belmont Wetlands State Park – Campground & Amenities project successfully remediated 2 hectares of contaminated land, specifically asbestos, and transformed the site into a sustainable and income-generating asset for the State Park. Located at Redhead Beach, NSW, the project aimed to develop formalised camping facilities while ensuring the land was properly remediated and environmentally safe.

The land remediation was carried out in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the project’s Remedial Action Plan (RAP). The plan required the site to be covered with a geofabric marker layer, topped with a minimum of 500mm of verified clean fill to safely encapsulate the contamination. Existing contaminated stockpiles and subgrades were regraded, minimising the need for the removal and disposal of contaminated material. Approximately 50,000 tons of clean fill, sourced from a nearby borrow pit, were utilised to cap the site under the supervision of an appointed environmental consultant.

One of the key challenges was ensuring that future services, including electrical, water, septic, and fire hydrants, could be installed without damaging the contamination marker layer. Careful replanning was undertaken to avoid any compromise to the site’s integrity during this phase.

The project also involved the installation of essential infrastructure, including mains electricity, potable water systems, on-site septic systems, ground irrigation system and fire hydrants. Additionally, an amenities building and picnic shelters were constructed to support the campground’s operations.

A major focus of the project was minimizing disruption to the surrounding community, particularly those using the Beach Access Road to access Redhead Beach. Baker Built successfully executed the project, ensuring there was no adverse impact on the community throughout the planning and delivery stages.
